At the time of selling or moving a vehicle it is very important that the procedure is well organized and complies with VicRoads recommendations in order to make it legal.
Selling or moving your reusable vehicle
If you are selling or moving your reusable vehicle, there are some important steps you should not miss. It is very important that all parts grant valid IDs during the process (ID Cards, passports o Driving license.). This is done to complete the correct identification of both parts, and to complete the transfer of the vehicle in a safe manner.
Step 1.
Before Sell Vehicle, you must first make sure that the vehicle is registered in your name. You can access this data by entering the official VicRoads website. Remember that a vehicle registration (or renewal) certificate can also be used as proof of ownership.
Step 2.
Download the Vehicle Transfer form from the official VicRoads website.
In some cases VicRoads authority will require a certificate of roadworthiness. Please check the VicRoads website to check the exemptions.
You will need to have your VicRoads customer number. This number can be set up in your driving license or in your most recent registration renewal notice.
At this stage, you need to look if you want to keep your number plates or none at all. In case you want to keep them you will need to notify the VIcRoads department and cancel your registration. Remember that this may result in a fee payment to keep the numbers.
Step 3.
Sell Vehicle and complete the transfer form in the correct manner. Take your time filling out this document to avoid mistakes. Make sure all details are correct and fully completed, do not miss any details. The document must be signed by both parties. This is very important, as this document needs to be uploaded to the system and be easy to read.
Along with the transfer form, it is highly recommended that you complete a purchase receipt. After you have completed all the paperwork, keep a copy of all the documents so that you have proof of the transaction.
Step 4.
Notify the VicRoads department within the next 14 days of the transaction.
As the seller of the vehicle, you must submit the “Disposal Notification” using your VicRoads account, and notify VicRoads of the transaction. Once this process is complete, the vehicle will be transferred to the new owner within a day. The buyer then has to complete the online procedure using VicRoads personal account and the next steps and pay the fee to finally complete the process. Failure to complete all of this process within the 14 day timeframe will result in the transaction being suspended.
Please note that all documents will be requested at this point, and you will be asked to upload a picture or scan a PDF of the transaction documents.
Sell your vehicle to a dealer.
In this case it is the responsibility of the dealers themselves to go through all the paperwork on your behalf. A fee will be paid and it is strongly recommended that a copy (or photograph) of all signed documents be retained.
